Walking in Groningen

Groningen is known for its vast polders, fields and pastures. However, there are plenty of forests where you can make beautiful walks. Also a walk through the historical city center of the city, with a visit to the Martini Tower, is really worth a visit.

Groningen forests

Most of the hiking trails will lead you through the forests of Groningen. You see centuries-old oaks, porcelain fungus and the so-called ‘borgblumkes’ in the ‘Overbos Fraeylemaborg’ in Slochteren. During your walk in the Ontswedde you will mostly find needle trees and an abundance of Lilies of the valley. The largest forest is the Noordlaarderbos where cultural-historical routes are marked. You can find, among other things, burial mounds of up to 2500 years old. With a little luck you can also see special raptorial birds such as the long-eared owl and the hawk.

City walk in Groningen

You can walk, guided or unguided, along the attractions in the historic city center of Groningen. The city had developed several interesting routes with long and short distances. Of course you should really pay a visit to the Martini Tower. In good weather you can climb the tower up to 97 meters. A visit to the Groningen city brewery is also fun to do. You can do a tour and a tasting. If this tasting triggered you, you can sit down on a terrace at the main market square for another drink.
