Hiking through the Waterland

Just outside of Amsterdam you can make beautiful walks in the Waterland region. The transition from city to countryside might give you a special experience. Away from the hustle and bustle you can embrace the peace and quiet of the countryside. And that in just 15 minutes!

Dikes and traditional clothing

The waterland region is the wetland area along the Markerlake in North Holland. You can walk around Volendam, Edam and Broek in Waterland. You will find, apart from the beautiful nature, some traces of the old Dutch culture in this area. The half-timbered houses, the traditional clothing or the fisherman’s life are a few examples. You can do a walk on dikes, by the peat meadow landscapes and you might see birds like lapwings and Redshank.

Marken and the horse

A nice small trip is a walk through Marken, this island is a quiet area of old Holland with beautiful wooden cottages with an atmosphere from centuries ago. Some ladies there still wear the traditional clothing. You can walk along the fishing port, the historic center and the Church neighborhood. A little further you can find the horse of Marken. You can not visit this lighthouse, but it will give you a stunning view across the Markerlake.
