Hiking in the Southern Limburg region

The rolling landscapes with sometimes even steep slopes, especially in the south of Limburg, is a favorite of the sporty hiker. You can walk over hills and through valleys. Sometimes over flat plateaus and often through authentic Limburg villages. The southern Limburg region has enough possibilities to discover when you like hiking.

Hills and bokkenrijders

While you walk through the southern region of Limburg it gives you the feeling that you are in another country. The green hills, the forests and vast landscapes with water mills and castles throw you off. There are several routes developed especially for hikers. The local tourist office can tell you all about them. You can buy maps of routes with promising names such as the trail of the bokkenrijders, Knopen lopen echt- susteren and the Pierre Cuipers route. These routes will lead you through the highlights of the landscape of the province Limburg.

Basilica and St. Pieter’s

For a more cultural discovery you can walk around in Maastricht. You can do this individually or you can book a group tour. You can visit, among other things, the Basilica of Saint Servatius, the Bishop’s mill and the Helpoort. End your walk with a drink on the Vrijthof square, the ‘coziest square of the Netherland, an absolute must. If you prefer a sporty walk then you should visit the Sint-Pietersberg. You can choose from 20 hiking trails that starts at fortress St. Pieter via the marl quarries to the Meuse.
